Postcards from the Garden City
Singapore is a city that breathes in layers. Glass towers, tropical greens, humid, sudden rain, and streets that glow long after sunset. We timed our visit to catch the city in its most vibrant state- Chinese New Year. This year’s theme was ‘Wish,’ and we could feel that hopeful energy everywhere, from the hum of the Chingay parade to the scarlet lanterns lining the streets.
This guide isn't just about the 'gram-worthy spots; it’s a peek into my suitcase, what I wore to stay cool, where we found the best vegetarian bites, and the little travel truths I learned along the way.
The Art of Tropical Dressing
When the humidity is a constant companion, your wardrobe must be your ally.
Look for silhouettes that stand away from the body and fabrics that breathe like crisp linens and soft cottons. Think easy-to-wear slip dresses, versatile crops, and the kind of shorts that feel like a second skin.
Here is how I navigated the city’s iconic corners without losing my cool.
The Iconic Skyline
Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay & The Cloud Forest
We spent our first day wandering through the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome. Even with the mist, walking under that equatorial sun is no joke. I lived in my Cotton-Linen Crop Top. The sleeveless cut and V-neckline were lifesavers for airflow. I paired mine with white denim for structure, but if I were doing it again, linen shorts would be perfect. A few beaded jewelry added just enough "vacation mode" to the look.
The Heart of Heritage
Chinatown & The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple
Chinatown was a sea of crimson and gold, dragon dances, bustling bazaars, and the scent of incense for the New Year. We spent a quiet morning at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, a place so serene I actually found a moment to practice meditation amidst the holiday bustle. Because the streets were so visually loud, I chose a Slip Dress in a muted tone to create a bit of visual calm.
A Note for the Traveler: The temple has a dress code. If you’re wearing a sleeveless dress or something above the knee, keep a lightweight shawl in your bag. They do provide cover-ups, but there’s something more personal about carrying your own.
Island Life at Sentosa
Sentosa & Tanjong Beach Club
Sentosa is a bit of a marvel, a man-made escape that feels worlds away from the city bustle. We skipped those terrifyingly high rides in Universal and headed straight for the salt air at Tanjong Beach Club. Not that I was afraid of those rollercoasters, of course..(I had the perfect outfit for beach club, wink wink) To end the day by the ocean, I changed into a breezy maxi dress for our date night. The best part? It had pockets.
The Hair Truth: Don’t waste your morning styling your hair. Instead, keep a rotation of cute scrunchies or claw clips in your pocket. As the humidity climbs, you will find yourself doing an emergency updo within minutes of stepping out of the hotel. Unless, of course, you’re aiming for the full "Monica Geller in Barbados" look—in which case, carry on!
Souvenirs & Shopping Diary
Singapore is a playground for shoppers. If you crave the polished floors of luxury, Orchard Road is your sanctuary- every name from Dior to Charles & Keith lives here. But my heart stayed in Chinatown and Haji Lane. These streets are lined with handcrafted treasures: handfans, ceramics, magnets, and intricate hair jewelry. We even found an anime pop-up in Chinatown. We went "for my husband," but let’s be honest, I ended up buying a few things just because they were too cute to leave behind. That’s the danger of Singapore; even the souvenirs you didn't know you needed find a way into your tote.
I met a lovely woman at a local stall who taught me the ancient art of securing a bun with a single wooden stick. That’s the real luxury of travel, the exchange of culture through craft.
The Shopping Manifesto
The "Buy it Now" Rule: If a piece speaks to you, take it home. Don’t wait for a better price or a "later" that might not come. I still think about the hair sticks I didn't buy.
The Tote Strategy: Always carry two canvas totes. They’re better for the planet, easier on your shoulders than plastic bags, saves you from juggling multiple plastic bags and keeps your hands free for more coffee.
Respect the Craft: Please avoid bargaining at local artisan stalls. A handmade piece carries weeks of someone’s life and a piece of their soul. Supporting handmade is supporting a dream.
To Sip & To Savor
A Vegetarian’s Perspective
- The Sweet Escape: A trip to Singapore is incomplete without the velvety, thick coconut ice cream from Co+Nut+ink. It’s incredibly refreshing in the heat, especially since they serve it right in a coconut shell with a side of fresh tender coconut water. It’s a total mood lifter.
- The famous ice cream sandwich served inside soft, rainbow-colored bread is absolutely worth the hype. It’s simple, sweet, and the perfect companion for a humid walk.
- The Cinematic Dinner: For a special night out, Firangi Superstar is my top pick. They’ve experimented with Indian flavors and iconic dishes in a way that feels like a cinematic experience. It’s the perfect place to wear your favorite Naal dress and a bit of "shimmer" for a date night.
